    FORWARD MOVING THROUGH ONLINE NETWORKING

New IAAP Online Forums Now Available-- Feel Free to Join in!

The IAAP Online Forums were recently upgraded to improve page load speed and navigation. In addition, individual member profiles have been added so IAAP members can provide optional information about themselves and easily network other members with similar interests.

To access the Forums, log in to "Members' Place" and then see "Forums" on the top menu.

Forum topic areas include administrative/management skills, office technology, casual conversations, regional networking and forums for admins working in various business types, such as legal, medical, technology, education, and more.

You're invited to join your IAAP colleagues in a wide variety of topic discussions or just review the message postings to glean some valuable "news you can use." Be sure to log in regularly-- new topics are added daily!

Reminder: Order Your Administrative Professionals Week Commemorative Pin

Each year, the Host Committee for the annual IAAP International Convention &  Education Forum offers a special Administrative Professionals Week commemorative lapel pin for sale as a fundraiser to offset expenses involved in hosting our international convention.

The lapel pins are $5 each (U.S. funds only; shipping and handling extra-- see link to order form below). Wearing this pin during Administrative Professionals Week is an excellent "conversation starter" and a great way to support your profession and association.

A printable order form is available here (link also available on the Administrative Professionals Week/Day page of the IAAP website). Contact for pin ordering questions: Connie Zerangue Depew, e-mail: connie.zerangue@
    shawgrp.com.

Deadline for orders: January 15, 2008. Pins will ship on or before the week of March 17.

Submit Info About Chapter Administrative Professionals Week Events

Again this year, an APW event information submittal form is available in the "Members' Place" section of the IAAP website for chapters to enter information about their events. The event information will then be published in a searchable database on the APW/APD page on the international website so site visitors will be able to find chapter-sponsored programs in their area.

Look for the link to the submittal form under "Latest News at a Glance" in "Members' Place."

You'll find observance suggestions and the latest news and information in the Administrative Professionals Week/Day page of the IAAP website.

IAAP CHAPTER AND DIVISION BEST PRACTICES

    Preparing Your Speaker to Shine

The better you prepare your speaker, the more likely he/she will hit the mark and leave your attendees well satisfied and with information that exactly meets their needs. Here are some suggestions for priming your speaker to be a hit with your audience.

    • Know your members. The best way to read them correctly is to survey each year and ask them what skills they are looking to develop, how their workplaces may be changing, and what topics are of high interest. It's also a good time to ask for their recommendations of top-notch area presenters.
    • What outcomes are you striving for? Do you want to focus on application within the chapter or in the workplace? Is it to be skill building or motivational in nature? Do you expect active participation or expert advice? As Stephen Covey recommends, "Begin with the end in mind."

Performance Reports for November 2007 Exams

Performance Reports for the November 2007 CPS and CAP exams are estimated to mail December 18 (approximately 45 days after the exam). If there are any delays, a notice will be posted on the front page of the IAAP website giving a new mailing date.  Remember, this is only a mailing date. We have no control over postal service delivery. If your Performance Report is not received within 10 business days after mailing (allow at least 15 days for international mail), notify the Certification Department (certification@iaap-hq.org) and we will be happy to mail a duplicate.  Performance Reports cannot be accessed via the web, nor can they be sent via e-mail or fax. Best wishes to all who will be receiving their Reports in December.

    May 2008 Examinations
Dates for the next exams are May 2 and 3, 2008: May 2 for Part 4 of the CAP exam, and May 3 for Parts 1-3 of the CPS and CAP exams. (Approved sabbatarian sites and select international sites will administer the exams May 1 and 2).  Deadline for applying is February 15; international candidates, please apply by February 1. New candidates should apply using the forms in the Certification Application Packet, which can be found on the IAAP website at www.iaap-hq.org/Cert/CertAppPacket.pdf. Eligible retake candidates will receive individualized registration forms in late January.

    Annual Certification Conference

Mark your calendars for the 2008 Certification Conference:
    October 19-22, 2008
    Grand Hyatt Hotel
    Denver CO

Hotel registration is now open and additional hotel information can be found at
    www.iaap-hq.org/Cert/Conf/Index.htm

Additional conference details will be available on the IAAP website in February 2008, and registration will open June 1 for active CPS and CAP holders. Space permitting, those not certified will be able to register starting August 1.

Many Ways to Earn Recertification Points

Are you an active CPS or CAP holder looking for ways to gain your required recertification points?

    • The annual Certification Conference (held in the fall) and Professional Education Conference (held in the spring) each typically offer at least 12-16 recertification points.

    • The IAAP International Convention & Education Forum provides an average of 10 recertification points, depending on which education sessions you attend (even more if you attend the pre- and post-convention sessions).

    • Chapter educational programs may qualify (make sure your chapter's program chair or certification chair is submitting those programs to the Certification Department at Headquarters ahead of time so they can give you a recertification certificate).

    • There may be many courses provided by your employer, or by seminar companies like National Seminars, or by your local college. (Remember the course content merely needs to fall within the categories tested on the CPS and CAP exams and the course must be at least one-hour).

    • Can't take time off during work to attend educational programs? How about the 50-Minute books and the OPTIONS program? Have you provided information on the OPTIONS program to your employer, and shown him/her how those courses can benefit their organization? Your employer can invest in you and your worth to the organization for $199 and gain a full year's education. Gather information on the OPTIONS program from the IAAP website (www.iaap-hq.org) under Education & Training and present it to your employer. Point out to your employer that by providing the OPTIONS program they are helping you gain 24 of the required 90 recertification points.

Additional information on the recertification process is available at www.iaap-hq.org/Cert/recertification.pdf

Questions about certification? Contact the Certification Department at 816.891.6600 x2225, 2227, or 2248; or e-mail your questions to certification@iaap-hq.org.
