A Whale of a Good
Chapter Educational Program What does training killer whales like Shamu have to do with IAAP and its members? The answer was revealed at a dinner meeting held by the San Fernando Valley Chapter (San Fernando Valley CA) on October 16 in celebration of National Bosses Day. The program was titled “Whale Done!” from Ken Blanchard’s book, Whale Done!: The Power of Positive Relationships. It was facilitated by Randy Pazen, who currently works as a senior trainer at Northrop Grumman Corporation. Pazen was formerly a consultant at Sea World. "This event was a great success based on feedback received from chapter members and guests, including our members' executives," said SFV chapter president Imelda C. Yap CPS/CAP. "We're excited to have several more exceptional educational programs scheduled during this 2007-2008 "Forward Moving" year," she added.

Partners with Local Telecommunications Company and Radio Station to Hold
Bosses Day Contest Beothuk Chapter (St. John's, Newfoundland) partnered with a local telecommunications company, Newfound Mobility Solutions, and radio station (OZFM) to offer a Bosses Day Contest. Listeners were invited to e‑mail the station saying why they felt their boss deserved to be recognized, and the contest was not limited to admins only. If chosen, their boss would win a Blackberry from Newfound Mobility Solutions, and the person submitting the winning name would win a photo printer donated by Beothuk Chapter. On Bosses Day, October 16, OZFM announced that the winners were Barb Cox, Director of the Office of Research at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and her Office Administrator, Elizabeth Williams. As it turned out, although Beothuk Chapter had no involvement with the selection process, Elizabeth is one of the chapter's members. And, the chapter was quite surprised to learn later that Elizabeth's co-winner boss, Barb Cox, had once been an active member of Beothuk Chapter in the mid-1970s and had earned her CPS designation during that time! Beothuk Chapter President Lenore Cahill CPS and Public Relations Chair Patricia Rideout CPS met with Barb and Elizabeth at OZFM radio station to present them with their prizes. A photo of the presentation is above -- this photo was also published in the local TV magazine, the Newfoundland Herald -- great free publicity for the chapter. Since this year's event was such a success, OZFM said they are looking forward to working with Beothuk Chapter for a Bosses Day promotion again next year. To begin the process of recruiting student members, Emerald Chapter assisted the Student Chapter by organizing an IMPACT meeting.

For the Good of the Profession
Harford Chapter (Bel Air MD) has two goals for its members; (1) promote leadership by example and mentoring, and (2) provide opportunities for members to learn and grow (increased competence as leaders and professionals). One of the main strategies the chapter's board of directors felt could be successful in accomplishing these goals is in the area of public speaking (how many of us are really comfortable speaking before a group?).
Since there is considerable speaking before a group at a chapter meeting, the board decided to focus on this forum and adjust its meeting format. Rather than the Chapter President overseeing the entire meeting (as has been the tradition), the chapter's board members (Vice President, Secretary, & Treasurer) share in this responsibility and each lead different portions of the meeting agenda. Additionally, the chapter's committee chairpersons (or designee) are requested to provide updates to the group at each meeting. These changes are truly "leading by example."
A new topic has been added to the meeting agenda, "The Good of the Profession," wherein chapter members are given an opportunity to share a workplace situation, an administrative tip, recap an IAAP event, and similar types of information useful to the administrative professional; yet another opportunity for public speaking.
These changes to the Harford Chapter's meetings have been refreshing and well received. The Harford Chapter members are competent leaders and professionals and we invite members from other chapters to join us at our chapter meetings and welcome them to share their experiences! CHAPTER BEST PRACTICES Yo-Mah-O Chapter Meets Membership Goal Yo-Mah-O Chapter (Youngstown OH) hosted a membership IMPACT meeting on Tuesday, November 13. Flyers for the meeting were distributed to members at the October 9 meeting as well as by email. Members were encouraged to bring guests to the impact meeting. Announcements about the meeting were also placed in the local newspapers. Approximately 70 flyers were mailed to area administrative professionals and were also circulated to members of the Youngstown Rotary Club and students and instructors at ITT Technical Center and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. Fourteen prospective members attended the impact meeting, and to date, four have decided to join IAAP. Chapter dues and Division dues will be waived for these members. Prospective members all received folders containing the following: a copy of Office Pro magazine; IAAP brochures concerning certification and recertification; Turning Jobs into Careers brochure; A copy of Desknotes (Yo-Mah-O Chapter newsletter); IAAP Application form; chapter brochure; Guest Contact Information Card; “Bee Persistent—Bee Determined—Bee Successful” bookmark provided by Chapter President Judy Cundik; Letter of welcome from President Judy Cundik; Business card for President Judy Cundik. In addition to the folders, prospective members received sample office products packets from Avery and Bic Corp. Barbara Kramer organized a display of umbrellas with the theme "Come in from the rain and shine with IAAP," and guests were also given a compact umbrella as a thank-you gift. Yo-Mah-O members who brought guests to the impact meeting all received a thank you gift—a journal with decorative bees on the front cover. These members were also asked to complete an informational card listing their name, guest’s name, and date. The cards will be collected at each monthly meeting from members who bring guests. At the May meeting, a drawing will be held and the winner will receive his/her next year’s dues paid OR Ohio Division Annual Meeting registration paid. Our featured speaker for the impact meeting was Mr. Ray Kashmiry, founder and president of R. Kashmiry and Associates in Boardman. His topic focused on the benefits of belonging to a professional organization. Mr. Kashmiry offered an additional incentive—he pledged to contribute $10 for every individual who joined IAAP as a result of the impact meeting. Yo-Mah-O members Denise Altman, Marlene Dailey CPS/CAP, and Joyce Laska gave brief presentations on behalf of the education, community service, certification, and scholarship committees. Sharyn Fees CPS served as facilitator. Chrissy Blackwell CPS/CAP, Ohio Division Recording Secretary and Yo-Mah-O Chapter’s Board Contact, attended the meeting to provide an update on Ohio Division events. Follow-up letters will be sent to all who attended the impact meeting thanking them for attending and inviting them to a future meeting. Regular email contact will also be kept with these individuals. Initiation of new members has tentatively been planned for January of 2008. For additional information, please contact Sharyn Fees at 330/507-5515 or sefees@ysu.edu. CHAPTER BEST PRACTICES Taking Advantage of Unsought Opportunities By Constance Boyer CPS/CAP, IAAP Lake Washington East Chapter President In the Puget Sound area in Washington, summer is a time to be outside enjoying the beautiful mountains, trails, lakes, and streams—many area chapters, like ours (Lake Washington East) do not meet in July and August. Gearing people up to attend meetings and bring their friends to introduce them to IAAP can be a real challenge when September rolls around. Our chapter was able to take advantage of an offer of a free event hosted by a local restaurant to use as an impromptu Impact meeting and as a fun social start to our IAAP year. One of our members, Mary Ochoa CPS of IBM Corporation, has great relationships with many of the hotels and restaurants in the Seattle area. Her contact at Tulio’s Restaurant offered to host an appetizer and wine event to thank Mary for referring business to Tulio’s. Mary quickly turned this into a win/win situation and asked if she could invite the local IAAP chapters, administrative professionals who make decisions for company events and hotel travel stays. They quickly took a liking to this idea! Together they picked a date and offered the event immediately after work on Tuesday, September 25, 2007. They also agreed to open it up to non IAAP members and asked that we invite friends/co-workers to attend with us as well. We immediately circulated a flyer, provided by Tulio’s, to our members, and to the officers of the Seattle and Everett Chapters. Many then circulated the flyer within their businesses and the RSVP's began flooding into Tulios! In the meantime the Lake Washington East officers and Membership Chair determined how we could quickly put together some packets and strategized who could attend the event and welcome people on behalf of IAAP. A few days before the event, Mary Ochoa CPS sent a reminder out, which enabled us to remind our non-IAAP colleagues whom we’d invited. The day of the event we were thrilled to find that attendance was fabulous! There were approximately 60 people at the event, of which about 30 were not IAAP members. We had three of our Lake Washington East Chapter officers in attendance, our Membership Chairperson, and our Division President, Jacqueline Petrick there to greet people and chat about IAAP. Tulio’s personnel were wonderful hosts and gained many contacts for future events. Many of the event guests walked away with gift certificates or bottles of wine. We distributed some information at the event and followed up by mailing 10 packets to guests who asked for more information. At this point 2 people have followed up by attending a chapter meeting and several have connected with our Certification chair to get advice and assistance to pursue their Certifications.

Corporate Chapter is FORWARD MOVING This presentation was made shortly after the chapter hosted its first annual Executive Appreciation Dinner on October 23rd. This was the first time administrative professionals within the hospital honored their doctors and executives. The evening’s guest speaker was ESPN Analyst and Motivational Speaker, Mark Adams who amazingly enough, was able to get the entire room movin' and shakin' to some fancy 80’s dance moves before captivating the group with his motivational and moving presentation. IAAP members participated in this hallmark event to say thank you for the support, leadership and encouragement they receive from their executives and doctors everyday. This event sparked an enormous amount of respect, appreciation and more importantly interest, from the hospital management. To date, the CCHMC chapter has several members who have already received certification but the chapter also has two members who attended the certification seminar, seven took the certification test a few weeks ago, one took the CAP exam, and 12 are currently studying for the May exam. "This has been a very busy five months for the CCHMC chapter and much has been accomplished but much more has yet to be done. We are looking forward to our future as we continue to learn and grow in the IAAP family," says chapter president Davies. CHAPTER BEST PRACTICES Ames Chapter Aims for Continued Success Ames Chapter (Ames IA) held a Strategic Planning session in August to kick off the 2007-2008 "Forward Moving" year. The session was held on a Saturday morning from 8:30–12:00 noon, and all members were invited and encouraged to attend. Discussion topics included a thorough review of the Bylaws, with several suggestions and changes to be made to streamline chapter operations; a revised meeting calendar was developed that added two monthly meetings with educational programs in place of "socials" or skipped months; committee revision to combine the newsletter, webmaster and publicity into the Communications/Publicity committee, and the scholarship committee was reinstated with two $500 scholarships to be awarded this year students in the business program at DMACC Boone campus. To stimulate membership growth earlier in the IAAP year, the chapter moved its annual Impact Meeting from spring to fall. A very successful meeting was presented October 2, resulting in 35 attendees including 13 guests. Of these, six individuals have joined Ames Chapter (three students, and three professional members) to date. The chapter's leadership also decided to review the chapter's program offerings to make sure that they were offering pertinent programs for career-minded administrative professionals. The leaders decided that the monthly programs should be the main focus, with up to 45 minutes allowed for education. The chapter is also planning to offer an educational seminar event during APW. Traditionally, this seminar has been the chapter's main source of income. The chapter plans to offer a full 6-hour seminar that includes lunch, and market the event to administrative professionals across their metro area. In November, several members of the Ames and Victory Chapters visited the IAAP International Headquarters in Kansas City and toured the building and met with staff. Note to all IAAP members -- you are very welcome to visit your IAAP Headquarters in Kansas City -- just let us know when you want to visit and your HQ staff will welcome you with open arms!
