Communications from 2007-2008 International President Judy McCoy CPS/CAP

January 2008

Communication from International President Judy McCoy

As we steer into the second half of our IAAP year, many chapter and division road crews continue to work at driving up our member and chapter numbers.  Remember that as we move into the 2008-2009 IAAP year, our recognition programs will move away from 2007-2008 numbers based awards to value based recognition.

This month I want to share my thoughts on where we are in our current journey.  We've hit a few speed bumps and made a few detours and side trips over the last two months.  The good news is that we've added new wheels to our vehicles, changed our tires and gassed-up for an exciting trip through the rest of the 2007-2008 IAAP year!.

LAP 3: FORWARD MOVING

Others may set the pace, but only we can take the driver’s seat!

As we drive into the second half of our 2007-2008 year, we have the opportunity to reflect on the past and more importantly look toward the future.  The International Board of Directors faced some tough choices during the first part of this association year.  The decisions made by the board were difficult and challenged our resolve to act, not based on personal relationships, but what was best for the members of IAAP and the future of this 65-year-old organization.  As with any experience that requires you to look deep inside yourself, I assure you that your International Board of Directors is a stronger and more cohesive group of tested leaders.  We are ready to face any challenge with a renewed sense of vigor and fortitude.

I already witness this development as the board drives into IAAP governance matters that require our undivided attention.  There are four subcommittees within the board working on important projects that affect the future of this organization.  These include subcommittees on Campaigning, Recognition Programs, Strategic Planning and the Incoming Division President’s Conference.  At this point, the entire board is engaged in at least one of these subcommittees, and all are making significant progress.  The subcommittees allow the board to continue to advance important initiatives between board meetings so that our face-to-face meeting time is used most effectively.

In addition to the subcommittee work, the board will discuss how to integrate the findings of a comprehensive survey recently completed by the American Society of Association Executives.  The Seven Measures of Success is the written results of this survey for which Jim Collins, the author of Good to Great, provided guidance and input.  The Seven Measures approach will significantly change the way the IAAP Board and Headquarters conduct our business, make decisions and interact with our members.  You will hear much more on this initiative as we move forward.

During these past few months, I have also worked closely with Executive Director Bretthauer with changes he has made at our headquarters office.   You will hear a few new names as Don prepares headquarters staff to handle future initiatives.  The International Board is fully behind these changes and is excited to work with the headquarters team to meet our challenges and opportunities for the future.

Thank you all for your driven programs and events that make our association so successful.  I encourage you to pick up your speed and take some new roads as you move through the rest of the year.  I hope to issues some speeding tickets, and that’s a good thing in this MOVING FORWARD year!

SEPTEMBER 2007

We are well into the IAAP year and our chapters and members are already busy planning various programs, conferences and meetings. When I left the starting line in Tampa and considered what type of information I wanted to share with you during the year, I decided I would choose to take a side road and change the type of communication coming from the president.

As I asked during my incoming words at Convention, how can we expect our members to step up to volunteer their time to lead at ANY level if they don’t know where the road is going?  Those who have led know that there are stop signs, speed limits and u-turns…as well as some very fast races…as we progress through the year.

Therefore, the race is on:  Each month I’m going to share information about various programs and tools already available for your use as you drive through the year as leaders, members and future leaders, beginning with this first lap: IAAP IMPACT.

LAP 1: BUCKLE UP FOR IMPACT

I created a document especially to help you as you plan an easy trip to invite prospects to attend a special chapter meeting for the purpose of growing your chapter.  I promise…it’s an easy drive!  Also, below is the route to even more information on our IAAP website. Check it out!
