This past Saturday, March 28th the Greenville, SC Chapter of IAAP held their closing Ceremony at the Hilton Garden Inn, Greenville, SC. We had 35 past and present members in attendance. One member had been a Chapter President in all 3 names of the organization, NSA, CPS and IAAP! What a milestone!
We began with a fabulous buffet luncheon that everyone enjoyed. Then we started the program titled “Past, Present, Future”. First some of our retired members talked about the history of the Chapter over the past 67 years. The reminisced with stories of events, learning and fun they had over the years. Next presenters talked about the current state of the Chapter and how we worked together with The Greenville Tech Student Chapter and the importance of Certification and how many members had been through certification classes and hold the current CAP or CAP-OM certification. Last our Division President shared a vision of the future of IAAP and what we can look forward to in the new revitalization to continue to Lead, Learn, Connect & Excel!

March has been a busy, but exciting month for The Foundation of IAAP! Two of The Foundation’s key fundraising events, the Amazing Ride and the Silent Auction, launched this month and the board of directors made a trip to Albuquerque, N.M. for our spring board meeting.
During our trip to Albuquerque, we visited Vista Grande, our “place in the sun.” This was my fifth visit and it was wonderful to see it again. I am so proud of our investment there. We have some exciting news to share about Vista Grande in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for next month’s Foundation News e-newsletter.

It's always so gratifying to receive that Members of Excellence certificate and signature block every year. No matter how many times I receive it, it still brings a smile to my face because my efforts are being recognized. Thanks IAAP for this program!

They say your net worth is determined by your network. I do believe the more people you meet, connect
with, and get to know, the more opportunities arise and the more enriched your life will be. What is one great way to meet new people? You guessed it! Networking.
For many people—especially you introverts out there—networking can be intimidating. However, networking success relies on how you perceive it. When viewed as a pressuring situation—one in which you have to make an outstanding first impression, nail your 30-second elevator pitch, and be able to ‘work the room’ with ease and grace—it may appear impossible! If, on the other hand, networking is viewed as an exciting opportunity—one to meet new people, enter into a curious conversation, and potentially create new business and/or personal connections—it may not seem so bad after all.

All of us on the board and at Headquarters are excited and anxious for the new, revitalized IAAP to come to fruition. However, it’s not realistic to think everything will happen overnight. Rather, the revitalization of IAAP is a gradual and evolving process. Through this process, we are ensuring members are heard.
You are an integral part of making this revitalization a success, and we are indeed listening to what you have to say about the coming changes as we receive feedback. A new Branch and LAN structure will soon be in place. This structure will allow IAAP local touch points to focus entirely on professional development, education, and networking. We aim to make the Branches and LANs as professionally focused and unencumbered as possible.

You may have feelings, opinions, and ideas that are not being shared in your workplace. You may think someone else will do it, maybe no one will listen to you, or that you are wrong.
Let’s look at the opposite approach when you apply focus, balance, and execution to your savvy skills. Shrewdness and practical knowledge—especially in business—is defined as savvy. I’m confident the skills, training, and development you already possess qualifies you as such. Therefore, you can indeed complete the task. Your executives and peers will listen to you. Who knows, you may be right.
In today’s workplace, the administrative assistant is expected to possess and master many skills; one of the most valuable is leadership. Your mindset is vital to successful leadership, no matter the position you hold within your organization. Let’s delve into some of your savvy as it applies to focus and leadership mindset.
Here we are again, and my IAAP life continues. I attended our chapter meeting last night and we had a wonderful program on"The 10 Decision Leaders Make Every Day." The first decision was to focus and some days that's not my strong suit. I found it interesting when the speaker said there was no such thing as multitasking and my first thought was you never raised children. He did explain his thoughts on the subject and they are valid in the office.
I understand I called our division a chapter in Chapter 3 so I have corrected that. However, I thought I would let you know that in the very early days there was a Missouri Chapter in the St. Louis area. I've been reading through our history and here's what I think -- no validation. I think there were secretarial chapters before NSA was formed and these chapters were invited to become a part of NSA in 1942. Some accepted and some did not. There was a reference in our history that the members of St. Louis Chapter did not think the Missouri Chapter would become a part of NSA. There is no reference after about the second year.
Now, back to my experiences. I had a choice to make if I wanted to continue my membership and my involvement. I had graduated from college, my executive was retiring, and I needed to make a work decision. I was promoted to an exempt position in the world of technology. I was doing what was then called limited mainframe security. Although the position was administrative in nature, it did not meet the definition of a secretary so I could most anything but be an officer outside of the chapter.
Registration is now open for my online study groups to prepare students to sit for the September 2015 CAP and OM exams. These study groups will last for 16 weeks, beginning in May.
It can be frustrating and overwhelming to work your way through all the material alone. I am here to help guide you through the process and hold your hand!!!

Technology and I have been feuding for the past several weeks and right now technology is winning. I'm patient, though, and I know eventually all the problems (real or imagined) will be resolved.
I thought I'd get Chapter 3 posted as I have a few minutes before my Lady Vols vs. the Lady Wildcats basketball game begins. My husband is a University of Tennessee fan and I was exposed to Southeast Conference intensity the first three years of our marriage. Women's basketball was not then what it is today and I love following the game. My daughter is a University of Missouri graduate so when Mizzou moved into the SEC it brought with it interesting times in the family.
Anyway, Chapter 3 has to do with the four years I served on the Missouri Division Board of Directors. By the time I served as chapter president I had seen several division presidents come and go and learned something from all of them. I had made up my mind I wanted to continue my leadership experience and opportunity to learn and I really felt I had something to offer. My plan was to experience several elected positions, if the voters cooperated, as I moved up the leadership ladder. My plans changed along the way.
There are many popular sites for networking (schmoozing, interacting, making contacts, meeting people, exchanging cards, making friends, etc.) in the business and personal realm. Some of these are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google Plus, Instagram, Flickr, Meetup, Reddit, and Ryze, just to name a few. Please share which sites you use and if they have been helpful in networking for you. This information is requested for a possible article.
Even though we work in support professions, leadership is an important aspect of our careers and our daily jobs. We have to be skilled at thinking on our feet, decision-making, emotional intelligence, and other essential qualities of a leader.
I hear from so many of you that leadership skills are the most important aspect of your professional development and I would agree. My leadership positions on the Board of Directors, in my career, and various organizations I’m a part of were all thanks to helpful training I received from IAAP. Becoming an effective, skilled leader is a long—yet valuable—journey. Having a guiding force to help you learn the ropes is key. I wish IAAP Leadership Academy had been around earlier in my career. My success would have come much more easily had I attended such an amazing program. This is not an opportunity to miss.
I watched the IAAP informational webinar today, and I must say that a lot of questions were answered, and I do appreciate that. There's nothing more important than an understanding. At first,I must admit I did not let anything really stick about the changes it would go in one ear and out of the other. Especially with everyone feeling hurt and disappointed and there were not too many positive comments being made. After watching the webinar, I have a better understanding of why the changes are being made and how it will effect my membership in the future. OfficeTeam and IAAP have partnered on a new research project called Office of the Future,
which examines how evolving workplace trends are impacting
administrative professionals. As part of this project, we recently asked
more than 2,200 IAAP members how accurately their job descriptions, job titles, and salaries match what they’re actually doing at work. Curious about what we found out?
Not surprisingly, 93 percent of administrative professionals surveyed
felt it’s important to have a job title that accurately reflects their
