The first IAAP Summit is in the books! If you were fortunate enough to attend, I hope you learned a lot, made some new connections, and had a great time overall in Louisville. It was great to see familiar faces and get to know new ones.

The Foundation of IAAP had a lot going on this year at Summit, including the Silent Auction, and The Foundation Celebration. We also had a booth at Marketplace. I hope you were able to join us for some of the fun.

We are happy to report that the Silent Auction raised $10,000! We couldn’t have done this without all of the donors, the volunteers and, of course, the bidders. If you were one of the lucky winning bidders, please share your item on our Facebook page. We’d love to see the great things you took home!

This March, after spending 18 years with the same company - I was finally "impacted" as the company says.  My job was eliminated and after a lot of soul searching I decided to spread my wings and find out if there was life after this.  

During the process of looking for a new job and interviewing, I was asked two or three times specifically if I had the IAAP Certification but mostly when I would get to that black on the on-line application I had nothing to enter.

I was able to find a new job and started there not 5 days after my previous job ended.  Once I got into my new job, I realized that I wasn't getting any younger.  I knew I wouldn't be going back to school, but I also knew, I didn't want my career to end like this.  So, I decided this was it.  I was going to go out on top (well, not for another 10 years but still) and I WOULD have those initials after my name.

I'm scared.  I'm nervous.  I'm broke. (haha)  I've paid for all of this myself.  My membership, my registration, my training classes, my books, the exam - all of it.  There's a lot riding on this.  I know I have learned a lot during

Great article by The Huffington Post. I've often wondered the same thing. This causes a lot of problems for existing assistants, too. Personally, I don't appreciate a high level exec hiring a non-seasoned assistant, who causes problems they don't even realize because they lack the experience, then expects me and the other experienced assistants to train them on a basic frame of reference that comes with supporting managers throughout the ranks, let alone high level and C-level management, over the course of years. It’s very frustrating, shows poor management decisions and a lack of understanding that this is a cookie cutter position which it is not. I have seen a couple of execs higher an assistant who never worked as an assistant before. Needless to say, those people never worked out and their lack of experience quickly showed. These execs were even surprised and frustrated that it didn't work out and went on to make the very same mistake again only to repeat the very same exact cycle that just occurred before.

One of the things I like best about attending Summit is the chance to put names with faces of the students from my study groups. I was so excited that I had a chance to meet several of my students while I was in Louisville last month. It truly is a highlight of my visits, especially when I can read their name tags with their CAP and OM designations flaunted for the world to see!

I met up with one very special lady from one of my past CAP study groups. I won’t say her name, since I’m not sure she would want it publicized, but she and I ended up by serendipity to sit at the same table during one of the morning keynote sessions. Afterwards, she and I sat for a few minutes talking about the amazing impact certification has had on her life and career. She indicated that her company coworkers have treated her with much more respect since she achieved certification and that they have expanded her responsibilities to reflect that level of respect. She wanted me to know how excited she was about this achievement and how much she had enjoyed and benefitted from participating in my study group.

She is currently facing some personal challenges as her spouse was recently diagnosed with some medical issues. However, despite these challenges, she has decided to pursue the OM certification next spring. She plans to join my study group that starts this fall to prepare for it. I love that I get to share her journey yet again!

If you Google “mentor” you not only receive 9,380,000 links, you’ll also find the definition:  a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. The mentor may be older or younger, but have a certain area of expertise.

The etymology of the word is Greek, derived from Greek history. In his old age Mentor was a friend of Odysseus who placed Mentor and Odysseus' foster-brother Eumaeus in charge of his son Telemachus, when Odysseus left for the Trojan War.

I was privileged to be mentored throughout my forty plus years in the administrative profession.  Whether it was an active or silent mentor, the individuals who were my official mentors unselfishly shared their time, experience and business acumen.  I was and am forever grateful.

For mentees, some key benefits of business mentoring include:

Experience at My First International Annual Event – 2015 The Summit.

For several years I had asked my supervisor to attend EFAM (Education Forum and Annual Meeting) that International had so when he said yes to the 2015 The Summit, I was excited and elated.  This was desire that had come true.  As our organization structure was changing, I did not know what to expect but was excited to have the opportunity to attend.

Due to health issues I was not sure how much I would be able to participate, but wanted to get those recertification points; not only for me, but be accountable to my supervisor because he supported me as an IAAP member, as well as, the company was paying for The Summit.

I knew I could save money for my company by rooming with someone and the other ladies from my former chapter had their rooms and roommates so I reached out to the IAAP web community.  I was able to arrange sharing a room at the Marriott with a member from Kentucky.

In one of those sleepy moments before going to sleep last night I was thinking about the post-it booth at Summit.  As my mind wandered I wondered what it’s like to work at 3M.  Any time you need something to write on there must always be a handy sticky note or similar nearby.  Wandering a bit more I wondered what it would be like to always have the tool needed to accomplish a task always available.  Then the ah ha moment: it usually is.  I may have to open my mind.  I may have to ask for it.  I’m guessing if I let go of a few stereotypes, try not to be a super standalone admin, that whatever tool, program prompt, or assistance is just as close as that sticky note is to the 3M employee.

Registration is now open for my online study groups to prepare students to sit for the March 2016 CAP and OM exams. These study groups will last for 16 weeks, beginning in November.

It can be frustrating and overwhelming to work your way through all the material alone. I am here to help guide you through the process and hold your hand!!!

My study groups include review of the material, helpful additional online resources, recordings of all sessions so you can participate even if the live sessions aren't convenient, general test taking tips, practice questions and more.

Had a great time at Summit and it culminated in a fantastic day on Thursday. A small cohort of us went on a tour to the Louisville Slugger Bat Factory, the Heaven Hilll Bourbon Heritage Center and Mammoth Cave. What an awesome day and a terrific group of folks to share it with.

More and more companies are utilizing Sharepoint for collaboration and document management. Administrative professionals are often tasked with overseeing the sites as part of their records management and meeting support responsibilities. Even if your company isn't using it yet, there's a good chance they will in the future.

Would you like to learn more about this very useful software?

I'm starting a four week long online certification study group for Sharepoint 2013. Sessions will be held from 7-9 PM Central Time on Wednesday nights from Sept. 2-23, 2015. Live sessions aren't convenient for you? No problem, I record all sessions, and the links are available for review at your leisure.

The Sharepoint exam is part of the Microsoft Office Specialist certification program. Each test you take gets you 5 CAP recertification points, up to 20 points maximum under the current recertification guidelines. But you will find this study group useful even if you are not planning to pursue the certification.

This is my final message to the membership before my term as president ends. It’s been an exciting and fulfilling year. I appreciate each and every member. Thank you for sticking with us as we have been navigating the new IAAP structure.

Our 29 Branches are up and running. You can now access their websites. We officially have 144 new Local Area Networks. You can find more information about the LANs on the Branch website. You can also find out about any other events taking place within the Branch areas, such as Connections and Cocktails events. I’m very excited to see this all come together. Speaking of Connections and Cocktails, if you haven’t visited the Facebook page yet, it’s full of fun photos and also announcements of upcoming gatherings across the U.S. and Canada. You can access it by putting “IAAP Connections and Cocktails” in the Facebook search bar or access it through our Facebook page.

I am quickly reaching out to you to share in the good news that the IAAP N. Atlantic Branch has approved our application and we are now one of its 7 LANs!!  Encouraged by long time IAAP Springfield Members/Officers, I have accepted the role as LAN Coordinator and am looking forward to help get this PARTY STARTED!!!

We have a number of events in the works and will be communicating these through the IAAP site, e-mail, and social media very soon.  I’m so excited about the IAAP SPRINGFIELD LAN and growing our network of Administrative Professionals.

If only we could count on scientists to figure out time travel one of these days. Just imagine all the mistakes we will be able to go back and correct in the future. In the meantime, though, you’ll need to rely on the wisdom of others to help prevent you from making mistakes in the first place.

Most of us wish we had had someone to hold our hand through our first years on the job. A lucky few were blessed with mentors and patient supervisors who guided us in our journey, but most of us had to feel our way along in the dark, tripping over misplaced office supplies and bumping into open file drawers until we could finally stumble across the light switch and figure out how best to manage our careers. We gained a wealth of experience the hard way, but we would much prefer to share our knowledge with those coming behind us and give them an easier path to follow.

Just a few short weeks until Summit in Louisville!!! Time is slipping away so quickly! I love having the chance to see old friends and make new friends.

Are you planning to stay an extra day or two for sightseeing, but a little nervous about venturing out on your own? I've organized a full day tour for those who are interested on Thursday, July 30, 2015.

I've chartered a bus which will take us to the Louisville Slugger Bat Factory, then on to a  bourbon distillery. Next we'll head to Mammoth Cave where we will have lunch and get a tour of the amazing caves. 

Cost for this full day tour includes ground transportation, tour fees, lunch, taxes, and gratuities.
