President's Message

Don't miss this month's message from International President Susan Shamali CPS/CAP. You can access it in the IAAP Web Community home page.

We've Got EFAM News!

A consistent comment we get about Education Forum and Annual Meetings is that attendees want more education. We gave you more education last year and we’re giving you even more in 2010. This year you won’t just hear one energizing keynote speaker but two -- one on Tuesday morning and one early evening. In addition, were adding an hour of educational workshops on Tuesday morning and bringing back product showcases. You won't want to miss EFAM in Boston. Registration opens up in April. Watch for it!

Watch Connections next month for our announcement of EFAM keynoters.

Way to Go Recruiting Members!

Please join IAAP in thanking the 625 members who have recruited new members from July 1, 2009 through January 31, 2010. These individuals are a true reflection of the Power of Commitment and their efforts are greatly appreciated. Click here to see the full list of recruiters.

2009-2010 Power of Commitment Commemorative Pin

The 2009-2010 Power of Commitment Commemorative Pin is not just an Administrative Professionals Week pin – it is a pin for all seasons and all reasons! Be among the first to wear the Power of Commitment pin!

Aside from celebrating Administrative Professionals Week, here are some of the ways you can use the pin:

• You have made a personal commitment to work towards the Member of Excellence
• Welcome a new chapter member
• Present to members who have recruited a new member
• Present to a member who has earned a certification
• Present to members who attend a chapter workshop
• Present to members who have obtained Member of Excellence
• Present to outgoing and incoming committee chairs

Remember, there will not be an international board theme pin for this year. The Power of Commitment Pin is being used to commemorate all of the 2009-2010 IAAP year.

All proceeds go to the 2010 Education Forum and Annual Meeting Host Committee.

You can either order online or print out the Power Of Commitment order form and mail it in with your payment.

Thank you for supporting the host committee's efforts to host the best EFAM ever. See you in Boston.

I can't complain about the nasty weather in Kansas City since we have members on the east coast who might still be buried. It does seem to be a long, cold winter and we're not through with it yet. If you're stuck indoors, we have great reading material for you in this issue. We also have resources for you in time for Administrative Professionals Week which is April 18 - 24 with Administrative Professionals Day on April 21.

If you are planning an event for APW or are seeking media attention for your chapter, read this Q&A with the Greater Boston Chapter with membership chair Gail Freeman CPS. Their chapter has garnered a lot of publicity that not only makes their chapter look good, but also IAAP and admins in general. If your chapter needs help in this area, the Q&A is a must read.

Do you know of an outstanding, professional IAAP chapter? Are you in an outstanding chapter? I'd like to hear from you for a future question and answer article on IAAP outstanding chapters. Send your suggestions to eallen@iaap-hq.org.

We've also got an article, just for Connections, that will help you find more hours in your day. How do you get things done with so many interruptions and distractions? The article "Maximizing Office Productivity" will help.

Have you ever wondered what the Retirement Trust Foundation does and how it's connected with IAAP? Read this Q&A with Trust Chairman Kathy Hampton CPS/CAP. You'll have all your questions answered.

Spring is around the corner and with it comes Administrative Professionals Week which is April 18 - 24 with Administrative Professionals Day on April 21. Look in an upcoming issue of OfficePro Express for details on this year's contest. Here's a hint--the winner will get to see Boston in the summer!

Survey
We Want Your Opinions

We're conducting a survey and would like your opinion on the economy, the job hunt, working for your boss and social networking. There are only a few questions. The survey will take only a few minutes to complete. Please give us your anonymous opinion on the IAAP Workplace Survey.

Become omnilinguistic, able to speak whatever language that’s needed to effectively communicate in any situation.

Pathways to Excellence
Do you remember the three “R”s of school – Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic?  Well there are three “R”s of IAAP Membership and they are Recruitment, Retention and Reinstatement. Recruitment and retention are so important that they are included in the Pathways to Excellence Program Principles. Take a moment and think about the following questions.

If you have the cure for the common cold, would you share it? The answer by an overwhelming majority would be yes!

If you have the cure for the common job, would you share it? That one is a bit tougher.  IAAP is the cure but many of us are afraid or don’t know how to share the benefits of membership with others.

For the member who is trying to recruit new members, show your coworkers the IAAP Web Community and all the features available to members. You can also direct them to the benefits page which gives them quick and concise reasons for becoming a member.  Don’t forget to give them the membership application or direct them to the online join option.  When they join and list you as the recruiter, you will have met one of the criteria needed to become a 2009-2010 Member of Excellence.

Chapters can recruit new members by having a Membership Drive (formerly known as an IMPACT meeting). We have a PowerPoint presentation and script available to help you. Just log in at http://community.iaap-hq.org and click Resources – Search Library. Enter 2028 in the Document ID field and click Search to bring up the documents for download.  Chapters who hold a Membership Drive meeting between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010 will meet one of the criteria needed to become a 2009-2010 Chapter of Excellence.

Divisions can also meet one of the criteria needed to become a 2009-2010 Division of Excellence by sustaining a net increase in membership of 8 percent so encourage your chapters and members in their recruitment efforts.

The benefits of IAAP membership are numerous so don’t be afraid to share them with your friends and coworkers.  An increase in recruitment and retention will cause an increase in the talent pool, leadership opportunities and benefits.

Visit http://community.iaap-hq.org to participate in the Pathways to Excellence eGroup and full details concerning the Pathways to Excellence program can be found at http://pathways.iaap-hq.org.

Certification News

Preparing for the CPS and CAP exams
Each person taking the CPS or CAP exam should download and print their own copy of the Certification Review Guide. This guide provides the content outline of all exam parts and includes sample questions. The guide also contains the complete bibliography of all recommended study materials—both the college textbooks used to write the exams and review materials that can be used in conjunction with those college texts. Pay special attention to the “Tips to Assist You in Preparing for the CPS and CAP Exams” found on Page 1.

The guide is available on the web community in the resource library and on the main website at:
http://www.iaap-hq.org/prodev/certification/examrevw.pdf.

Spreadsheet Available to Aid in Tracking Recertification Points
An Excel spreadsheet is available from the certification department to assist CPS and CAP holders in tracking and reporting their recertification points. CPS and CAP holders should use the spreadsheet to record recertification points as they are earned and then include the form with supporting documentation when submitting a complete recertification packet.

The Excel spreadsheet is at: (look for the link that says Recertification Spreadsheet).
http://www.iaap-hq.org/prodev/certification/recertification.html

The complete Recertification Brochure is at:
http://www.iaap-hq.org/prodev/certification/recertification.pdf
Both are also available on the web community in the resource library.

IAAP Products
Visit the IAAP Logo Shop

We opened the IAAP Logo Shop last month. It’s a place where you can get some of the IAAP branded products you’ve been asking for. Purchase shirts, ties, coffee mugs, grocery tote bags, dog clothes… well, maybe we haven’t been asked for that last one, but we’ve got them. The designs are like nothing you’ve seen from IAAP before, and we’re sure you’re going to like them. Click here to visit the IAAP Logo Shop, and while you’re there, be sure to check out the Avery binders that you can customize for your next meeting.

We still have our IAAP Bookstore where you can order books, CPS/CAP pins, paperweights, new member ribbons and more. You can access both stores from the "Shop" link at the right-hand top of the page at www.iaap-hq.org.

Staff Spotlight
Meet Claudia Whitsitt

Claudia Whitsitt has been working at IAAP since 1977. Her current title is office systems coordinator. She works in the accounting department under Sue Tuff.

"I backup the accounting specialist and cover the receptionist desk and all duties associated with it," said Claudia. "I key in CEU seminars and registrants, our comp list, update Academy for Certification, work with list rental billing and print invoices for Academy and OfficePro subscribers." Whew! She also handles all OfficePro new and current subscribers, missing issues, e-mails and works with agencies. She is also the one who comes to the rescue when the copiers/printers are acting up and calls for service or building issues arise. Her work here is varied so she also does the integration between our databases daily and performs special month-end processes associated with integration.

When she's not at work, Claudia enjoys spending time with her daughter Lindsey and her sister and her family.

"I like board games, playing Chicken Foot (dominos), making knotted blankets and joining in at local AARP meetings," said Claudia. "I am also on the staff employee relations committee."

You can contact Claudia at (816) 801-1316 or cwhitsitt@iaap-hq.org.
