Conference Tips
Get a bang for your buck with these tips

It's that time of year again, when conferences are on the horizon. Whether it's a daylong conference, a luncheon speaker or the IAAP International Convention and Education Forum, getting the most for your money is important.

Nina Spencer writes on how attendees can get the most out of their conference experience.

She gives useful ideas. If you want to see a speaker and you're scheduled for another session, check out whether you can purchase a CD of the session you missed.

Virtual Learning

Virtual events are an untapped solution to the inconvenience of being out of the office. Online learning is an excellent resource…without making any major changes to your busy schedule. IAAP is partnering with several outstanding training providers to bring learning to your desktop. Don’t miss these excellent opportunities to participate in audio seminars and audio-and-web-based workshops. Use the live sessions for independent learning or gather a group and make it a team venture, ensuring that your co-workers get the same message, at the same time, all for the same price. IAAP members receive a special discount. Note that if you can’t make the live event, you can purchase the CD now to learn later at your convenience. You’ll also receive recertification credit.

What makes a great minutes taker?

Ever had to take minutes with no warning? What did you do? Or have you been appointed minute taker because no one else will do it? If any of these situations have happened to you, then you need to attend the Minute Taking Made Easy workshop. Here’s your chance to shine! You’ll learn how to prevent complications, instead of setting yourself up for disaster. IAAP members receive three free issues of The Office Professional newsletter when they register. The special member registration price is $312.55 for an information packed day. The workshop is only offered in select cities.

Health Insurance Affinity Program

Health insurance is a vital component to any sound financial plan and is needed by everyone. Although most employers offer group coverage, not all employers offer medical benefits. More and more employers are reducing their contributions towards premium costs, sometimes requiring employees to pay the entire premium for spouse and dependent coverage. +

IAAP Member Health Insurance Plans can provide you with excellent health insurance choices and may save you up to 42% on your health insurance premiums*. With multiple plans and an extensive network of national providers (over 750,000), the IAAP Member Health Insurance Program is one of the most comprehensive health insurance programs available. There are three plans to choose from.

*All plans are medically underwritten and you must qualify for coverage. Plans may vary by state. Check with your member health plan representative for complete coverage details. Staff Spotlight
Meet Susan Whitaker

Susan Whitaker supervises the Distribution Department. She’s been working at Headquarters for 29 years. She came to work for IAAP – then NSA – in April of 1979.

It’s rare to see Susan sitting down, especially this time of year as she gets ready for International Convention and Education Forum. She supervises the daily activities and project scheduling for the Distribution Department. In addition she handles orders, phone and e-mail customer service. Susan schedules and ships the Cooperative Marketing material, prepares material and arranges transportation for Convention freight and handles on-site distribution as well as dealing with freight for the other meetings.

Susan was married for 32 years. She has four children, three step-children, 10 grandchildren plus three by marriage, and great-grandchildren. Her mother is still reasonably active at 98.

“I have been organist at Rock of Ages Evangelical Lutheran Church (a WELS church) for more than 25 years,” said Susan. “I spend much of my free time with my grandkids.”

She also enjoys listening to well-performed classical and country music.

You can contact phone Susan at 816-891-6600 x2246 or e-mail at swhitaker@iaap-hq.org.

Leadership Tips
Learn how to give difficult feedback

All of us are busy. We are victims of information overload, yet don’t have crucial face-to-face conversations that keep us connected in more meaningful ways.

Less personal communication can cause diffused focus and little in-depth dialogue, dehumanizing our work and home environments. Most of us need frequent feedback and discussion with others to benefit from different perspectives, to work more effectively, and to reach our fullest productivity.

What is the best way to give feedback, especially the difficult kind? Dr. Marilyn Manning, CSP, CMC, and international author of seven business books, gives some practical ideas on how to hold that difficult conversation in her article, Learn How to Give Difficult Feedback.
