Confident Minute Taking

You know that minutes are historical documents, but do you know what your responsibilities as minute taker entail? Many people never learn how to take good minutes, and simply copy what was done before— even if it was done badly. Don't allow a bad example to sabotage your career. Attend the “Minute Taking Made Easy” workshop to learn.

  • What minutes should contain – and what they shouldn't

  • Your role as a minute taker, including legal responsibilities

  • How to avoid writing "Bob said," "Mary said" over and over

  • The importance of accurate minutes

  • How to get rid of extraneous details and conversation to record only what really will matter after the meeting

IAAP members receive three free issues of The Office Professional newsletter when they register at the special member price of $312.55. For registration or more information, click here.

Has anyone watched the AMC TV series "Mad Men?" I watched the first show then forgot the station it was on and the time it aired,  which is why I missed most of the series. However, I did tune into a couple of shows last year after one of the writers of "Mad Men" called Headquarters to inquire about secretaries in the 1960s, their job duties and job titles. He wanted to be accurate in his script, not using today's terms that weren't used at the time. That 20-something writer based in LA said he knew the profession had changed a lot since the '60s and those now working in the field weren't like the traditional secretary of yesteryear.

Since its beginning, IAAP has kept up with changes affecting office professionals. We share relevant information to help you navigate today's workplace and your changing job duties, so you're not stuck in the 60s. Thanks for working with us to make the association a timely source of information for admins.

In this issue, don't miss the second installment of the membership series. This month Rhonda Strong shares excellent tips on how to treat a visitor to your chapter meeting.

We also have an inspirational article from national speaker and author Sandy Geroux about how to focus on where you're going not on where you've been.

You can now register for IAAP's Professional Education Conference. You won't want to miss out on this excellent opportunity to spend time with executive coaches that will help you in your career. More information is below.

Happy reading!

Membership Process Excellence
The Visitor

Can you remember the first chapter meeting you went to? If you didn't attend with a co-worker or friend, you most likely walked into the room alone, not knowing anyone. That can be daunting.

Rhonda Strong, vice president of the Tennessee Division, reminds us the
way to treat a visitor to your chapter is the same way you wish to be treated when you're a visitor-- an IAAP twist on the Golden Rule. Read "Be The Guest," which includes a checklist to help make your meeting stand-out to potential members.

Where's Your Focus?

With the new year rapidly approaching, we must use this critical time -- the remainder of 2008 -- to review and analyze our activities, make an effective plan and then take decisive action to create the 2009 we desire.
Sandy Geroux's article, "Where's Your Focus" will help you put in place a course of action so you can begin planning now to have a stellar and productive new year.
