My name is Alexis, and my goal is to become a Certified Administrative Professional. I started working for the Freeport Container Port, Freeport Bahamas, in 2008 as a receptionist. In 2010, I was promoted to Human Resources Assistant, assigned to the Compensation and Benefits Division. This exam has been a dream of mine for five years. In October 2011, after my annual performance appraisal, it was recommended that I take courses in the Human Resources field to improve my competency. I embraced the opportunity.

In November 2013, I enrolled at a local college to begin a one year Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) review program. It was a bit challenging, but I studied hard and completed the program in November 2014. This encouraged me even more to further my education.

I had planned to take the CAP exam in September 2015, then again in March 2016, but felt I was not ready.

I joined IAAP in December 2015 and began reading information on the CAP certification program and what was required to take the exam.

I came across an article by Marie Herman “Becoming the Renaissance Administrative Professional” which was inspiring. I was encouraged and motivated to press on to accomplish this goal. I am enthusiastic of the prospect of passing this exam. To make sure of this happens I enrolled in Marie’s study group.

When I pass and receive my certification, I am looking forward to being recognized as a component administrative professional.

I am enjoying the journey.

I didn't know you had seen that old article, Alexis! :) I really do love how that one turned out. Those critical thinking skills are so important in our profession.

Well you've done quite a bit of preparation already to reach this point. I have no doubt whatsoever that you'll sail through these next few months and finally accomplish that long awaited goal. I'm happy to share the journey with you.

Marie

Hi Drenda,

I am also from the Bahamas (Nassau) and looking forward to when I take the exam. Am hoping I can in March 2017. Will be attending my first Summit in July and that will kick me off to studying for the exam. I have already obtain my BA in Business Administration and Management but I want to get more hands-on skills that will help me even further in my field. I am an Administrative Assistant/Personal Assistant to the Director of The National Museum of The Bahamas.
