trep·i·da·tion
noun

:a feeling of fear about something that may happen.

I must admit to a fair amount of that feeling these past several months while researching the options for certification...and again right before pushing the button to join iaap and begin the challenge of obtaining certification in September 2016. I also must admit to a few moments of unadulterated panic shortly after pushing that button. :)

I decided to sit for the 2016 certification exam because I need to grow. I love my role as Executive Assistant tremendously and I work for a wonderful company that truly values me as an individual and as an asset to the corporation. That being said, I've not been to 'school' in a very long time, and while I attend seminars and webinars regularly, I realized I need to challenge myself....to move past the feeling of stagnation that seems to creep in once in awhile. My busy life tends to move on auto-pilot most days and I decided it was time to take back the steering wheel!

cour·age
noun

:the ability to do something that frightens one.

Fast forward several weeks. I have joined a study group to assist me on this journey, and I'm realizing a little more each day that I am firmly in control of the drivers seat! I go where I steer and what I think, I live. It takes courage to step into the unknown and strive for something. I'm proud of myself, and I also applaud the other adventurers taking this journey towards certification! Your courage is inspiring!!

Through this process I am hoping to gain a more in depth knowledge of areas that are not part of my daily responsibilities, such as finance and IT. It will give me a greater understanding of the big picture and I believe will make me a more effective member of my team.

I have 'penciled me in' on the calendar for 2 lunch dates and a few night and weekend sessions each week, and while I know life happens (daily!), I'm ready to stay flexible and I'm excited for this journey!

Let's do this...I know we can!!

I think most of us experienced trepidation and courage when we made the decision to sit for certification -- or any advanced educational experience. I didn't think too much about the courage part back when I made the decision so thank you for adding that word. Back then it was a six part, two-day exam with one part being an in-basket exercise. The instructions for that part were all verbal and you had to take notes (any way you wanted) in order to be able to complete that section. Yes, it involved transcription and typewriters. The good thing was you did not have to have the dictation word-for-word; you could make improvements. Today's test still tests you for the same things (other than note taking) and are still looking at whether or not you can spell, understand grammar, and can format a document.

I have found out over the years, going into any exam, starting with a positive attitude helps and I know all candidates can do that.
