Indiana is the first state in the United States to legislate State Certified Administrative Professionals.

HISTORY

In 2014 Indiana House Bill 1303 came to the attention of Indiana resident Sharon Katterjohn CAP-OM. This bill established a certification registry for trade professions with the ultimate goal to provide Indiana State Certification.

In May, 2015 Governor Pence signed Indiana House Enrolled Act No. 1303 (HB 1303) and effective July, 2015 amended Indiana Code IC 25-1 concerning professions and occupations and establishes an Indiana Certification Registry as part of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.

On October 21, 2016 International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) members Sharon Katterjohn, CAP-OM and Rhonda Schenk, CAP-OM presented the IAAP Application for Indiana State Certification to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency in Indianapolis, Indiana. The application was approved November 23, 2016. Both Sharon and Rhonda inaugurated the new on-line application system and are now Indiana State Certified Administrative Professionals (CAP00001 and CAP00002).

This endeavor took over two years and IAAP’s Certification Advisory Board is now Indiana’s approved standard for certifying administrative professionals. The single qualifying factor for Indiana State Certification is holding the IAAP credential of Certified Administrative Professional (CAP).

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR CAP HOLDERS IN INDIANA?

You can now apply online at http://www.in.gov/pla/3931.htm and click on Privately Certified Registry to become an Indiana Certified Administrative Professional. Be sure to add this to your resume!

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR CAP HOLDERS IN OTHER STATES?

If you are interested in carrying an Indiana State Certification, you can apply to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Presently there are no reciprocity restrictions.

2-03-17 It's my understanding the Tennessee program is a program for state employees only.
Under HB 1303 the Indiana Certified Administrative Program was legislated as part of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) who has oversight of the program. Certifications follow PLA guidelines to re-license/re-certify every two years. The main qualification to gain Indiana approval required a "Supporting Organization" that administers and recertifies credentialed professionals. In our case, the IAAP Certification Board that has existed since 1951 meets that qualification. The Indiana PLA confirms each applicant with our IAAP Certification Board to insure current CAP status.
Yes, any IAAP member should feel free to post this Press Release. Thank you for commenting.
Sharon Katterjohn, CAP-OM
