I will be sitting for the CAP exam this fall. All things having to do with being an Administrative Assistant speak to my soul. It can honestly be hectic sometimes, being the center of all office functions. But I really do love and enjoy my job. Although I love it, for all the important work that I do as well as my experience, knowledge and performance, I deserve and need to be compensated what I am worth. After being told by my employer that after 10 years with the company that I had “hit the ceiling” as far as salary was concerned, I felt as if the company no longer appreciated all that I do. At that point, I also felt as if I should sharpen up my skills to become more marketable to other employers before I could start a job search. That’s when I decided to research continuing education for Administrative Assistants. I was so excited to find information about IAAP. I actually couldn’t believe I’d never heard of it until earlier this year.
I hope that becoming certified will show potential employers just how dedicated I am to this profession. I am also hoping that this will open doors to other certifications as I intend to continue to get educated.
I initially planned to prepare for the exam by studying the CAP Study Guide alone. Once I received the study guide I was so excited about the content. I started to read it and quickly became overwhelmed. After all, it has been many years since I’d been in school and had to study for anything. I had gotten a suggestion on the IAAP SociaLink site to check out a study group hosted by Marie Herman. So I looked into it. This study group was highly recommended by several folks on my SociaLink feed and I am looking forward to guidance on studying for this exam.

You go girl - you are on the right track for success. I too joined IAAP in 1999 to get my CPS designation. It proved beneficial with increased wages, additional duties to challenge me in my position, and being elected as Board Secretary which had always previously been a position held by an officer of the company, a board member, and a male. Doors will be opened for you as you travel the highway of life. Good luck with your studies.
