Hi everyone!

My name is Kerry and I recently signed up for the CAP exam. I'm currently working as an Executive Assistant at a Biotech in Cambridge MA and learned about the CAP certification from a coworker. I did my research and signed up as a challenge and a way to prove myself. Some background, I graduated college with the yearning to work in the sports industry (being in Boston around 2008, that was a pretty lofty goal). I had been working in retail during college and took a job as an Admin at a nonprofit to get some professional experience, all while searching for that elusive sports role. Little did I realize that this move would wind up being the start of my journey. Because my career path has had so many twists and turns, I see the CAP as a great opportunity for me to really feel settled and accomplished.

I'm also a mother, I have a 3 year old daughter and recently gave birth to my son in February, two weeks before the covid explosion. His timing couldn't have been any better, though my maternity leave has looked much different than I thought it would. Motherhood will also pose challenge but with a supportive husband, I am confident I will have the time to properly prepare and study. This is serving as my "adult" time, something other than having a discussion about Elsa from Frozen or washing bottles. My husband is a CPA and has joked that it was his three letters that really inspired me.

I am nervous but excited for the challenges. Best wishes to everyone taking the exam this fall!

Hi, Kerry! I am also taking the exam in the fall (originally scheduled for spring), and I've been in the field over 15 years. I did a BA in philosophy & sociology and most of an MA (long story...) in Interpersonal & Organizational Communication, but my career was also winding and I eventually landed in this role that I love. When I joined my current employer is when I really fully embraced my purpose in this role. So, like you, I am pursuing certification as a way to solidify that and bring all I can to my accidental-but-chosen profession!

Wow that is a lot to bite off to have two littles while pursuing this. Time Management will be so critical. Look to carve out spots to read wherever you can. how wonderful that your spouse is supportive. That goes a long way. I am so happy you have chosen to share your journey with me!
