We will be using Zoom for Virtual Summit. Zoom is free to download and use, and each Zoom session will be password-protected to ensure the session’s security. Here is a link to the system requirements to participate in virtual Summit 2020. Quite simply, you’ll need a computer with camera, microphone, speakers, and good internet connection.
We recommend completing a tech check by comparing your system to the system requirements we put together
before Virtual Summit begins. Zoom links and passwords will be sent out the day prior to the session, and you can also access all Zoom links in the Virtual Summit application.
You can also reference the Zoom FAQ page for additional support on
downloading and using Zoom.
How to Connect
We will email out the Zoom link and password for the upcoming sessions the day before. You will also be able to access all session information in the Virtual Summit App. When connecting to your session, please ensure that you have a stable internet connection
and that you are in a quiet and distraction-free environment. Finally, don’t forget your tech check! Ensure that your machine can use Zoom easily and has a reliable camera, microphone, and speakers. IAAP will host two 1-hour tech
checks for all attendees at the following dates and times:
We will be using the Virtual Summit app throughout the event; think of the Virtual Summit app as your main hub for all logistics during Virtual Summit. You’ll be able to find links for the sessions, create your personalized agenda, connect with attendees,
and more. The Virtual Summit app is available on mobile devices, tablets, and laptop/desktop computers. We’ll send out the Virtual Summit app soon.
How the Sessions Will Work
You can find a schedule of Virtual Summit here. Education sessions will happen every Thursday and will be one hour
during Week One, and two hours during Weeks Two and Three. During education sessions, you can interact with fellow attendees and the speaker using the Chat function in Zoom. Some speakers will also have polls available to create
customized learning during the sessions.
Connect & Learn sessions happen every Friday for 45 minutes. You can choose from 3 different topics and 3 different types of Connect & Learn session within each topic:
Ed Talks are a fantastic way to learn different perspectives on a similar topic from several different speakers in 8 to 10 minute segments.
Peer Panels provide a moderated discussion with 3 different panelists on a similar topic and allow you, the participant, to ask questions of each panelist.
Roundtables are discussions among peers around one topic to help solve challenges and gain other perspectives; spaces are limited in the roundtables to ensure personalized learning—you will need a camera and microphone to participate.
Connect & Learn sessions are about applying our learning and building our community, so we want to make sure we see and hear you!
Even though we can’t see each other in person, we can still build connections. Connections don’t just have to happen between attendees—you’ll also have the chance to build relationships with the Virtual Summit trainers and IAAP staff throughout the conference.
Whether it’s during a social event, via chat during an education session, or meeting one-to-one through the app, there’s ample opportunity to grow your network and expand your community throughout Virtual Summit.
Have questions or concerns about how to make the most of your experience at our first Virtual Summit? Join Courtney Teel, Vaun Lee, and Nikki Unmack on July 13 @ 2:00 p.m. Central Time via Zoom! We’ll answer questions on how to network and connect with other attendees, highlights of the education sessions, and our can’t-miss Keynote Speakers.
Engagement Between Sessions
Learning and building connections are the top priorities at Summit, but we made sure to build some time for fun as well. During Virtual Summit, we have several events planned between sessions for everyone to get to know one another and keep the energy
Escape Room Game
IAAP has partnered up with the Escape Game to offer a virtual escape room game experience! We’ll send out additional details on what this will look like as we get closer to Virtual Summit.
IAAP’s Certification & Program Admin, Natasha Brewer, will lead us in relaxing and restorative yoga sessions throughout the conference. We’ll take the time to warm up and stretch before getting down to our learning for the day. Yoga sessions are from
7:30 to 8:00 a.m. Central time on July 17, 23, 24, and 30.
IAAP has created a variety of backgrounds to use during your time in session. Feel free to use these in your other Zoom meetings as well! Download of the ZIP file with a variety of options can be found here.
To help millions of parents juggling triple duties of working, sheltering and now teaching from home, we’ve compiled several free, online learning activities for every age and interest—all with an Orlando theme. From science lessons about living in space to art classes that teach how to draw Mickey Mouse—and plenty of other captivating stops
along the way—kids will be entertained, engaged, and (before they know it) educated.
Engagement Between Sessions
Our opening keynote speaker, Meghann Henry, will be guiding us through a creative process that asks us to investigate our thoughts around change management. To fully engage and participate in the session, please bring with you a piece of tin foil that
is at least 8 x 8 inches in size. Don't be afraid to bring the entire roll as well if that's easier!
If this year has taught us anything, it’s how to be online. Some of you may already know this, but learning online is different than learning in-person. We’ve sectioned out our sessions to make sure no one gets digital burn out, but we also wanted to
provide some quick tips on how to make this Virtual Summit as successful one:
To keep engagement high, the main rule of thumb is to be in an environment that is free of distractions. During social and Connect & Learn sessions, we ask that you please mute your microphone when you are not speaking, as this will allow everyone to
hear the speaker better and make the discussion more linear. Ensure that you dress appropriately and are aware of the state of your surroundings. Finally, we mainly ask that you please be respectful to all attendees. Give everyone
a chance to speak and ensure that you are being inclusive during all social events and discussions.
Know What You Need
What do you need to do to make your learning successful and to take care of yourself? If you’re a notetaker, make sure you have your note-taking process down. If sitting in your usual work-from-home spot isn’t serving you on a particular day, try moving
to a different (and distraction-free) spot. Maybe you can’t get focused until your morning cup of coffee, or you need water nearby to stay hydrated and engaged. Make sure you stretch and move around as well—nothing is worse than
feeling stiff and stuck in a seat!
Understand Your Technology
We’ve already touched on this, but we also want to emphasize the importance of understanding your technology before logging in to your first Virtual Summit session. Know the system requirements for Virtual Summit, and check that your microphone, speakers, camera, and internet all work. Finally, you can access Virtual Summit from your mobile phone, tablet, or computer, so make sure
you’ve decided which platform works best for you.
