My journey to take the CAP Exam
For the past 2 years, I’ve work for the seat of our local county government. Approximately one year into my tenure, a training brochure was sent out that our local community college was offering the Certified Administration Professional (CAP) class to prepare for a test. I expressed an interest as did one other in my immediate area. However, due to the fast-pace nature of our office, we set it aside to pursue at another time.
As a standard, I always encourage my collogues to attend school or training as I did with one particular member who came to me and wanted to attend college but had some hesitation about fitting it in with her children and a full time job. So we discussed other ways to pursue education to ease into the adult learning mindset. Ironically soon thereafter, she came across a “Dynamic Communication” flyer that provided IAAP CAP recertification credit and we attended together. To my surprise, the class held about 50 administrative professionals! It was discovered that the other 48 people, excluding my team, were connected with our local Board of Education who had an entire program set up to assist its professionals with the process and certification! That was all the inspiration I needed!
With my interest fully peaked, we researched it together! After seeing the benefits of the program, I set out to initiate a plan for the entire team of five administrative professionals from my office to attend. We discussed it together and researched what time period was best for the office and our personal commitments - then we dedicated ourselves to complete this together. We are currently doing an online course to prepare us for the test in September 2017!
