Career Evolution Phase 3
Hello! I'm excited to be a part of this community and learn more about the profession. I started my career in Technology nearly 30 years ago. I've had a lot of roles in Information Technology, from the installation of lab computers at a California Community College to Director of Technology at a seaside amusement park. Along the way I've provided support and training to many executives and their assistants. I've always admired the role of executive administrative assistant and day dreamed that maybe someday I could do well in that role. Covid put me in transition. I was no longer working for the amusement park, really feeling burn out from decades of working in technology, and growing more tired of having to prove myself as a woman in leadership. I have been exploring a life outside of technology. I'm still interested in working WITH technology. But I would like to step away from managing technology itself. Other types of leadership roles have not been within my reach because I never completed my Bachelor's degree. After exploring other roles, I've learned that the skills I'm pretty good at and enjoy doing are executive administrative assistant skills. So I started applying for those roles, and after a few years, have yet to enter this desired profession. I decided to take the CAP exam in hopes that the credential would highlight those skills on my resume, and show potential employers that I am serious about the profession. I believe I've been experiencing a lot of discrimination in the job search due to being a woman over 50, and that's frustrating. Since I've joined IAAP and Marie's study group, I'm feeling inspired and eager to learn. I'm letting go of the destination for a moment so I can enjoy the journey. Thank you to everyone who has provided this opportunity and for sharing your experience and wisdom. I am your humble protégé.
