My journey to the CAP exam

I was asked why I am sitting for the CAP exam.  For me the answer was simple, I wanted to get a raise at work.  This may seem too simple for some, but for me it was all the motivation I needed.  I began my career as a secretary in 2003, and later went to college to earn my bachelors degree in organizational management.  I always thought that earning my bachelors degree would increase my salary, but boy was I wrong.  I moved out of the country in 2008 and when I returned in 2011 the economy had taken a major hit.  Jobs were scarce and competition was fierce.  Again, I became a secretary because it’s what I know, and what I’m good at.  I found out about IAAP from a coworker who was about to sit for the CAP exam.  She told me that our employer agreed to reimburse her for the exam, and give her a 4% pay raise once she passed the exam.  This is exactly what I need, I thought.  I wanted to know more about IAAP and how I could take the CAP exam.

Once joining IAAP and learning more about it my feelings have changed.  I am now sitting for the CAP exam to better myself and to become more of an asset to my employer.  I feel a sense of pride after joining IAAP.  To prepare for the exam I have joined a wonderful study group and I have devoted my time to reading, studying, and learning all that I can.  I am mentally prepared to not only sit for the CAP exam, but to take full advantage of being a member of IAAP.  I am eager to meet others, and to share stories about our journey.

Well there's certainly nothing wrong with hoping that passing the CAP will lead to more money ultimately in your career. It may not be as direct a path for most as it is for you with your specific employer, but surveys have indeed found that over time certified admins tend to earn more money than non-certified admins.

I'm so glad though that you are also looking at the larger picture of the knowledge gained, self confidence and self esteem and quality of employee you will be by pursuing this certification. To me, those intangible qualities are absolutely just as important as the potential financial benefits.

Let's do this!!!
