Becoming a CAP...
Hello all. I just started Marie Herman's study group for the Fall CAP test and am here to share my "why."
I have been an Executive Assistant for an SVP at the same company for 15 years. However, for the past few years, I had been discussing the idea of a company-wide community with other peers that would benefit anyone in a support role (cross-training, mentorship, support, etc.) and realized it was something that is a passion of mine. Last year I proposed the idea to our CAO, and she immediately signed off on the idea, leaving me both exhilarated and terrified. In that meeting, I requested joining IAAP as in my research before the meeting; I found that no administrative positions in our company have a presence in orgs such as this. Naturally, CAP came up pretty quickly, so I built into my request that I could take the CAP, understand what it is all about and then share it with our newly formed community (The Support Community, which to date has 175+ members and growing daily). As much as I love being an EA, my role in The Support Community is truly what pushes me the most in this endeavor. During this first week of learning about teams, leadership, and management styles, I am absorbing it all like a sponge and want to share every last bit with the committee I lead to, in turn, benefit the community. I have been super blessed in my career, and this current stage has been the most exciting and rewarding. To learn more and test for the CAP to benefit others in support roles is what this is all about for me.
