My Why?
I started a new job 1 1/2 years ago after moving to Northern Virginia after living in the Philadelphia, PA area for 30 years. I started working for the Fire & Rescue Department in the County as the administrative Liaison to one of the 2 Assistant Fire Chief's and the 4 governance structure committees for a combined fire & rescue system which has about 1400 volunteer and career members in it. I knew nothing about Fire & Rescue. A year later, I have learned a lot but have still lots to learn. I am surrounded by super talented people - many of them 20 plus years younger than me. I feel like a relic in many ways in my (almost) middle 50's. Many of my peers are CAP's. I would like to earn that distinction, too. I am terrified of failing the exam as it has been 30 years since I was an official student. I know many people take on education and schooling at all points in their adult life and succeed. I want to prove to myself that I am able to do it. I want to broaden my skill set and knowledge base for my own sense of accomplishment, to increase the projects I can successfully undertake, to see that I can still learn things. I want to show my kids that I am still working to grow professionally, personally, and intellectually. They are all young adults, and I'd like to be that role model.

Hi Laura!  I too am in my 50's.  I had the same thoughts as you.  I was like "what was I thinking" and "I can't do this".  Then I had to tell myself, I can do this!  It was the thought of all the days and nights studying, then the test taking.  I talked myself into continuing on the CAP journey!  I am so glad I did.  I joined Marie Herman's Study Group!  I am so glad I did that too!  I have always had test anxiety.  Really bad!  But...in the study group, Marie tought us how to calm that fear and anxiety.  She also explained to us that we already know so much that what we don't know, she will have that covered in her study group.  Plus you have the support of everyone in the study group, I am sure your co-workers, and you have all of our support!  I just took it one day at a time.  I decided that what I already knew, I could spend time on, but...what I didn't know, would be what I studied the most on.  You will figure out ways that are best for you.  Please know that if you are struggling, DON"T GIVE UP!  We are all here to support you!  Reach out to everyone on this forum and I am positive that someone will help you!  I wish you nothing but good vibes, luck, and I will say a prayer for you!  YOU GOT THIS!!!

Best wishes to you, Laura. I was 59 when I went on the CAP journey and did it to challenge myself after being in the Admin Prof field for many years. I registered for Marie Herman's Study Group and dedicated hours to studying for the exam. I was nervous and doubted myself, but with the help of others in this amazing organization and my co-workers, I passed! I was so excited and to this day, I still feel the 'accomplishment' of my goal. Best wishes to you and if you need any help or support, reach out to me. Happy Holidays! Donna
