My Chance to Level Up with CAP
Hello, my name is Lisa Duffy and I've been an EA for over 30 years. I started out as an Office Assistant in the beginning and worked my way up to the C-Suite. I have over 20 years as an EA with over 15 years supporting C-Suite executives and over 20 years in event planning and management. Its been a long, rough journey as I've supported various levels of leadership styles (low to high maintenance) and questionable personalities. I've been yelled at, threatened, praised and rewarded as I'm sure some of you can relate.
My last job (before the one I currently have) was my dream job at a Biopharmaceutical company for almost 6 years which I absolutely loved, but bought a house more than 2 hours away (one-way) during the pandemic so I resigned when we were being called back into the office. I am currently supporting a COO at a FQHC but they don't quite understand the value of an EA or how to use us, so EAs keep leaving the company. The Administration staff are relatively new and are in the process of developing the company, and building new locations and remodeling our currently Administration building. My COO encouraged me to enroll in a leadership program which I am currently taking, so I know of the potential and position I am in to level up and the huge opportunity to become a great asset to the development of Administration and our future EA staff.
Things have changed in our industry (at least in Northern California) and I've noticed that companies are finally recognizing how much of a "Partner" we are instead of an assistant, because I have noticed the titles changed on posted jobs referencing partnerships, strategic partners, chiefs of staff, etc. So in addition the huge opportunity at my current place of employment and staying relevant and up-to-date on my skills, I believe that discipline and structure that comes from studying for the CAP certification will further develop my confidence and assurance in my craft, and having the title after my name will allow me to stand out.
