I've been going through the study guide and I see there are places in the book that reference keyboard shortcuts, and there are sample questions asking about shortcuts. I use keyboard shortcuts plenty, but I'm a Mac user and the guide references only PC shortcuts. 

 

Does anyone know if these kinds of questions are on the exam? I ask because many of these shortcuts are different on Macs (some a little different to the point where I can guess what the PC shortcut might be, but some significantly different to the point where I can't). It doesn't make much sense for me to waste time memorizing shortcuts that I can't actually put into practice, but I don't want to miss test questions for a silly reason like this either.

 

Does anyone remember if they've seen questions about keyboard shortcuts on the exam?

The CAP exam is PC based for these shortcuts and commands. I wish PCs and Macs were closer on these actions.

The shortcuts in the book are not accurate. At least the ones on Page 120; so be careful.

I am very disappointed that I spent $130 on a study guide with wrong information. It makes me worry what else might be incorrect in the book. This certification is supposed to be top-notch and help us stand out from a crowd of administrative professionals. Yet the study guide has errors!?!? I'd like to know what IAAP's plan is to address these errors so students can study correct information. Will a refund be offered? A free reprint of a correct study guide?

I'm especially disappointed that the error occurs in same Domain and PO that specifically addresses how to create and edit different document types. AND the errors appears exactly TWO PAGES after this statement: "Even more importantly, all printed pieces must be free of mistakes."

The IAAP CAP Study Guide was written by a group of highly experienced subject-matter experts, however this is the first edition and there very well could be errors.

Once an error is found we are correcting it. For the MS Excel short cuts listed on page 120, we are verifying the correct information and will post it in this SIF.

There are professionals that will proofread for a nominal fee. Also, some of the questions don't seem to be well thought out. They are some times worded in such a way as to leave the test taker wondering what the real question is. Finally, I am concerned about the test being "updated" and our group is essentially the guinea pig test takers. Did the same "qualified experts" update the test? I hope the questions are worded better than the PO review tests. I'm sure that someone worked very hard on the Exam Study Guide and don't mean to offend anyone, but the bottom line is that I pd. $139.99 for a sub-par Study Guide to take a very expensive exam.
I'd like to request that in the future we have any publications that represent our organization be professionally done and professionally proofread. I would be embarrassed to have someone outside our organization see this publication.

I completely understand your concerns but I want to tell you that the Study Guide did go through two professional proofreaders and a copy editor before it was published. Please remember this is our first edition.

As for the questions at the back of each chapter, they are retired questions that aren't used anymore for CAP. There is a sentence at the top of each that states they aren't current items. Items are retired for a variety of reasons some it the wording of the question. The examples of questions are only provided to help candidates become familiar with the type of multiple-choice questions that are on the exam not content.

As for the writers of the CAP questions, they are a completely different set of subject-matter experts (SMEs). They cannot be the same group that created the study guide due to conflict of interest and certification standards. Both sets of SMEs only saw the CAP Body of Knowledge, that is the only common point.

I want to correct any errors that people are finding. Typos and misspellings should not be in the guide because we paid a fair amount of money for the proofreaders.

Has there been any consideration given to modify the exam questions so that they apply to both Mac and PC users? Such as:

Which key combination closes a file window?
A) Alt-F4 (PC) -or- Cmd-W (Mac)
B) ...
C) ...
D) ...

I'm fully prepared to have to get these questions wrong on the exam. Could I fail the exam because of them? Maybe, maybe not. Guess I'll find out

That is a good idea and something we could consider for future question development. There aren't a lot of questions that pertain to directly to shortcuts but as we expand the CAP question bank, this is something we should address.
