Sitting for the Spring 2019
Hello, my name is Xavier Shellman. I have been an administrative professional for just under 20 years. Starting with my first job out of high school. I have been a member of IAAP on and off for about 10 of those years. During my years as an admin I have learned a lot on the job and through IAAP and I had always been interested in becoming certified. Most of my employers and even coworkers did not know anything about IAAP or the CAP (previously CPS) exam. So I didn't really pursue this certification. I thought it would just be a waste to have this amazing credential if no one knew what it was. So I thought a college degree would make more sense for me. Unfortunately, life kept getting in the way. Or I just kept getting in my own way. In any case, I never finished my degree. In the last two years, I have dedicated myself to accomplishing the goals that I'd always considered "lofty" or "pie in the sky." One by one I've been crossing them off the list. So this year I decided that my main goals would be to pursue my education seriously. I've registered for college and I'm taking two courses at a time online. If I keep this up I will have my degree by the end of next year. So I'm excited about that. I frequently look at job postings that I forward to friends who I think may be interested or qualified. Well, 2 weeks ago I was looking at an ad that listed an associates degree or the IAAP CAP listed as the required education. I couldn't believe it! This was a very desirable position in a city near mine and they were looking for people who had their CAP certificate. Well, once I saw that I knew now was the time to really buckle down and get it done. Luckily, Marie Herman's study group had just started. So I was able to register. There is a lot of reading but I think it will be worth it to finally have my CAP. I might even go so far as to add my OM to the mix.
