CPA Exam – Why am I on this path?

Back story - IAAP fell in my lap, thanks to my husband. He is a talker and I am not. He is in a position where he meets many new people every day. He met someone who was studying for the CAP exam last fall and as he learned what IAAP and the CAP exam was, I was in the back of him mind. He brought home the information which started me on this path.

I have been in an admin role for 10+ years now with no formal education past my high school diploma. I went from High School to the work force and then a mom. I love my admin roles but many times I have felt like “This is it”. There is minimal advancement in this role, or so I thought.

Currently I am an Executive Assistant to 1 of 13 partners in a top accounting firm in Dallas, TX. In this position, I have been able to learn basic accounting functions on top of my admin duties. In a previous position, I was able to have event planning experience alongside my admin duties. Coming to IAAP has shown me there is so much more to an Admin than “managing your manager”.

To ask, again, “Why am I on this path” is 2 fold. Of course I am wanting to use this certification to boost my income, boost my position, boost my advancement and appeal to other possible opportunities in the future but there is so much more to it than that. I am excited to combine my past experiences and what I will learn from this certification process and bring a bigger and more robust Admin position to my company. I will be the 1st CAP within my company. There are 6 other Executive Assistance in my office and the potential that we can bring to my firm is monumental. Bringing that to any table is invaluable to me.

I am worth it and it is time for me to achieve it!

Good luck in pursuing the certification designation. Also, "Thank You" to your husband for obtaining information about the CAP and providing it to you. Sounds like he could be a good spokesperson for certification.
