Discovering IAAP What an Epic Journey To Date! 2 H. Stirling I love that you have jumped in with both feet in IAAP. You really do get out of any organization at least as much as you are willing to put into it. Your story reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Anaïs Nin: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom”

CAP Certification Journey (Sept 2016) 2 D. Renz Many of us kind of "fall into" the administrative profession and then after doing it for a few years, look around and say... "well, I guess if I'm going to make this a career, I'd better start taking it seriously." I think that is when people actively start looking for professional associations like IAAP and certification programs. I've worked for engineering firms. They are often more supportive because of the licensing required for their own professions. I think it makes them take the idea of training more seriously than some other professions. That is awesome that your company is so supportive.I can't wait to see those initials after your name!!! Marie

Beginning my CAP journey 3 E. Wood You go, girl! I know you can make it!I firmly believe that *WE* are ultimately responsible for our careers, not our companies. We need to lay the groundwork for future jobs and sometimes we need to convince our bosses and companies that we are ready to move up and do more or that we deserve more for what we currently do. But it would be extremely difficult to accept any opportunities that arose if you had never taken the time to prepare your skills and yourself for that future opportunity. Let's do this! :)Marie

Scoring of CAP 1 S. Tadlock IAAP uses the criterion-reference method for test equating, which requires analysis by an outside company. Here is an explanation of what this process entails. Exam ScoringThe pass/fail cut-score is determined using a criterion-referenced method. The criterion-referenced standard (cut-score) is shown as a scaled score of 500. An exam score of 500 or higher indicates the candidate has passed the exam. An exam score of less than 500 indicates the candidate has failed the exam. The same level of knowledge and skill is required to meet the pass point of 500 regardless of the examination taken by the candidate. What is the criterion-referenced method?Criterion-referenced tests, a type of test introduced by Glaser (1962) and Popham and Husek (1969), are also known as domain referenced tests, competency tests, basic skills tests, mastery tests, performance tests or assessments, authentic assessments, objective-referenced tests, standards-based tests, credentialing exams, etc. These tests determine a candidate’s level of performance in relation to a well-defined domain of content.Norm-referenced tests determine a candidate’s level of the construct measured by a test in relation to a well-defined reference group of candidates, referred to as the norm group. Criterion-referenced tests permit a candidate’s score to be interpreted in relation to a domain of content, and norm-referenced tests permit a candidate’s score to be interpreted in relation to a group of examinees. The first interpretation is content-centered, and the second interpretation is examinee centered. On a criterion-referenced test, every candidate would pass if they meet the expected standard; alternatively, every candidate could fail if the standard is not met. On criterion-referenced tests it is possible for every person to pass the exam. Criterion-referenced tests have been compared to driver’s license exams which require would-be drivers to achieve a minimum competency to earn a license.IAAP continually updates its exams to keep pace with the changing environment of the administrative profession. Since criterion-referenced scoring is designed to measure a candidate’s performance against a fixed set of predetermined criteria, this method is commonly used for certification exams that produce new editions of a test and the scores from these editions have the same meaning over time. The level of exam difficulty may change from time to time. A test equating process assures that candidates must meet the same criterion-standard regardless of when they take the examination, or the group of candidates with whom they take the examination.

Inexpensive Test Material 3 Michelle C. Starks If you work for a university, you might first check to see if your library would order the books. Is the university supporting your certification pursuit? If so, ask your boss if they would allow you to order some books at company expense. Bear in mind, you don't necessarily need to use the exact books. If the university library won't order them for you, check to see what similar books they already have in stock (i.e. a college level management 101 book should be suitable, even if it is written by a different author). Choose a college level text book from each of the major areas (communication, organizational development, information technology, accounting, records management, etc.). Another option is to post here in the certification section asking if any past test takers would like to sell their relatively recent materials. Just be careful you don't got older than 2-3 years on the publication dates. Another option is to rent, as Barbara mentioned. Another option is to borrow, one at a time, via interlibrary loan through your public or university library (one at a time because you can only have them a few weeks at a time).   An additional option is to convince someone else to sit for the exam and purchase the materials together and share them. Finally, research each domain performance objective on the internet and use online research to drive your studying. There are many ways to reduce the expense of study materials. Put on your creativity thinking cap.
