2016 CAP certification - the journey begins! 3 A. Hopkins I think most of us experienced trepidation and courage when we made the decision to sit for certification -- or any advanced educational experience. I didn't think too much about the courage part back when I made the decision so thank you for adding that word. Back then it was a six part, two-day exam with one part being an in-basket exercise. The instructions for that part were all verbal and you had to take notes (any way you wanted) in order to be able to complete that section. Yes, it involved transcription and typewriters. The good thing was you did not have to have the dictation word-for-word; you could make improvements. Today's test still tests you for the same things (other than note taking) and are still looking at whether or not you can spell, understand grammar, and can format a document.I have found out over the years, going into any exam, starting with a positive attitude helps and I know all candidates can do that.

September 2016 OM Exam 3 J. Wyatt In 2004, after passing the CPS - now the CAP, I received a promotion. Even though you have been doing this work all along and are no doubt exceptional in many ways, passing the CAP can be the proof that others need to see you are head and shoulders above others in a similar role.Good for you!Sharon

Discovering IAAP What an Epic Journey To Date! 2 H. Stirling I love that you have jumped in with both feet in IAAP. You really do get out of any organization at least as much as you are willing to put into it. Your story reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Anaïs Nin: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom”

CAP Certification Journey (Sept 2016) 2 D. Renz Many of us kind of "fall into" the administrative profession and then after doing it for a few years, look around and say... "well, I guess if I'm going to make this a career, I'd better start taking it seriously." I think that is when people actively start looking for professional associations like IAAP and certification programs. I've worked for engineering firms. They are often more supportive because of the licensing required for their own professions. I think it makes them take the idea of training more seriously than some other professions. That is awesome that your company is so supportive.I can't wait to see those initials after your name!!! Marie

Beginning my CAP journey 3 E. Wood You go, girl! I know you can make it!I firmly believe that *WE* are ultimately responsible for our careers, not our companies. We need to lay the groundwork for future jobs and sometimes we need to convince our bosses and companies that we are ready to move up and do more or that we deserve more for what we currently do. But it would be extremely difficult to accept any opportunities that arose if you had never taken the time to prepare your skills and yourself for that future opportunity. Let's do this! :)Marie
